Tidech's "Pray 4 Me Or Else...", A Cry for Help in a World of Unmet Expectations
Zimbabwean rapper Tidech, based in South Africa, has released his latest project, Pray For Me Or Else..., an album that brings forth a gripping narrative of personal struggles, existential crises, and societal pressures.
The title itself is a bold statement—a plea for support and understanding as he navigates life’s chaotic journey. In a candid response about the meaning behind the album, Tidech shared that it's a loud cry to the people around him, acknowledging that he couldn’t make it through life’s challenges on his own.
Drawing from his upbringing, Tidech reflects on being caught up in worldly pleasures, which, in many ways, distracted him from his path to personal growth. This tension between immediate gratification and long-term success echoes a broader crisis faced by modern Zimbabwean youth.
Many dreams are crushed under the weight of societal expectations to pursue “stable” careers, often in fields far removed from their true passions. These pressures have left many feeling disillusioned, some turning to substance abuse as an escape from their harsh realities. Ckanyiso's Skit aptly captures the album's theme in a hilarious way (must check out).
The album showcases Tidech’s ability to weave these themes into powerful storytelling, touching on the struggles of balancing ambition, societal norms, and personal fulfillment. A highlight of Pray For Me Or Else... is the song Harare, featuring Malcolm Mufude, whose verse stands out as one of the most creative in recent memory. His lyrical dexterity paints a vivid picture of the city’s streets and the daily hustle many Zimbabweans face.
Other notable tracks include collaborations with rising stars like Banshee and Bush Baby, as well as Shebeen Rap artists Dingo Duke, Ndonzi Beatx and Dough Major, adding a fresh dynamic to the project. Dancehall Keddah, also makes an appearance, captivating listeners with his unique vocal range and style that bridges rap and dancehall in a seamless fusion.
With Pray For Me Or Else..., Tidech not only tells his story but also voices the internal battles many young people in Zimbabwe grapple with. It’s a project that speaks to the heart of youthful disillusionment, yet it offers moments of hope, creativity, and resilience, making it one of the most reflective rap albums to come out in recent times.
Tidech’s message is clear: while the journey may be hard, we all need someone to help us through.
