It has been two months in conversation with Ruvarashe Muzanenhamo, a charismatic upcoming model in Zimbabwe and at Riddims and Raps we deemed it necessary to bring the youthful voices but a feminine perspective this time (after a loud clamour that the genres we usually promote on this platform are male dominated/where the baddies at?) "I've discovered a unique passion for both my studies and modeling, which allows me to express myself in different ways. As a full-time international relations student, I am deeply committed to human rights, inclusivity, and law. These subjects fuel my desire to make a positive impact in the world and advocate for those who have been marginalized or oppressed. At the same time, I have a strong passion for modeling, which I see as an opportunity to challenge stereotypes and redefine the industry. What inspired you to become a model, and what do you hope to achieve in the industry?

From a young age, I always dreamed of becoming a model, but I lacked the confidence to pursue my passion due to the color of my skin tone and my weight. Growing up, I was surrounded by siblings who had much lighter skin complexions, and I often faced backlash and criticism because of this. It was a challenging experience that left a lasting impact on my self-esteem and body image. However, as I grew older, I realized the importance of representation and the need for girls like me to be depicted accurately and learn to love themselves as they are. I believe that every individual, regardless of their skin tone, size, or background, deserves to feel beautiful and empowered. This realization became the driving force behind my decision to pursue modeling. In the industry, I hope to achieve greatness by working on projects that align with my values and beliefs. I want to use my platform to promote body positivity, celebrate diversity, and create a safe environment for girls who aspire to be models.

My goal is to break down the narrow standards of beauty that have long dominated the fashion and media landscape and to redefine what it means to be a successful and influential model.

Through my work, I aim to inspire young girls to embrace their unique features and to never let societal pressures dictate their self-worth.

I want to be a role model for those who have faced similar challenges and to show them that with determination, resilience, and self-love, anything is possible. The Zimbabwean entertainment scene has undergone significant evolution over the years, particularly as the youth emerge as the driving force behind its transformation.

The current generation holds immense potential and creativity, and it is impressive to witness the achievements of artists like Curtly Gwindi and Holy Ten. They exemplify how young voices from Zimbabwe can captivate audiences, engage with diverse communities, and address relevant social issues through their music. The rise of these artists reflects a broader trend in the entertainment industry, where there is a growing emphasis on authenticity and representation. The youth are not only consumers of entertainment but also active participants in shaping the narrative.

They are challenging traditional norms and pushing for more inclusive and diverse portrayals in music, film, and other forms of artistic expression. I see myself fitting into this evolving landscape by embodying the belief that anyone, regardless of their background, can achieve their dreams. Growing up, I witnessed how these elements reflect our rich heritage, resilience, and the diverse experiences of our people. Music, for instance, has been a vital part of Zimbabwean culture, serving not only as entertainment but also as a means of communication and resistance. Artists like Thomas Mapfumo and Oliver Mtukudzi have used their music to address social issues and inspire hope among the people.

Their songs often resonate with our struggles and triumphs, connecting generations and fostering a sense of unity. The traditional instruments, like the mbira and Ngoma drums, carry the stories of our ancestors and remind us of our roots, while contemporary genres blend these traditions with modern influences, showcasing our evolving identity. Curtly Gwindi is one of those individuals. He has emerged as a prominent figure in both the entertainment and marketing industries at a young age. His work as a media broadcaster, marketing strategist, and brand influencer showcases his versatility and dedication. Curtly’s ability to connect with audiences and advocate for important issues is impressive.

He embodies the spirit of the youth in Zimbabwe, demonstrating that hard work and ambition can lead to success. His journey inspires me to pursue my passions fearlessly and to use my platform to uplift others.

Vee Kativhu is another remarkable figure who inspires me. Her academic journey, which includes degrees from prestigious institutions like Oxford and Harvard, is a testament to her resilience and determination. How do you express your personal style, and what influences your fashion choices?

When it comes to expressing my personal style, comfort is my top priority. I’ve learned that if I’m not comfortable in what I’m wearing, it’s hard for me to think straight or feel confident. My style really changes with my mood some days I might feel chic and polished, while other days I’m all about that relaxed vibe. I’m also a huge sneakerhead! There’s something about a fresh pair of sneakers that just makes my day. I love hunting for new kicks and incorporating them into my outfits. Sneakers add a fun, casual element to my style, and they definitely keep me grounded.

Interestingly, a lot of my fashion inspiration comes from Pinterest. I could spend hours scrolling through boards, saving looks that resonate with me. It’s funny to think about, but I find so much joy in curating my style this way. I’ve evolved over time, too what started as a wardrobe filled with black and white has transformed into a vibrant mix of colors. I’ve learned how to integrate shades that make my light brown eyes pop, my melanin and complement my body structure, from my head down to my bald head. Ultimately, my personal style is a reflection of who I am at any given moment. It’s about feeling good in my skin and expressing my individuality through my choices. I love that fashion allows me to experiment and evolve

What message do you hope to convey through your modeling and public presence?

Through my modeling and public presence, I want to share a heartfelt message about empowerment, authenticity, and the beauty of being a black girl. Growing up as a dark-skinned girl, I often felt the pressure of societal beauty standards that favored lighter skin tones. It was tough at times, and I found myself questioning my worth and beauty. While I recognize that lighter skin can come with certain advantages in our society, I truly believe that black is beautiful, regardless of skin tone.

My journey has taught me that real beauty comes from embracing who we are, and I want to inspire others to do the same. It’s so important to acknowledge the struggles that dark-skinned individuals face, but instead of pitting one skin tone against another, we should find a balance that celebrates the beauty in all shades. We need to uplift each other and recognize that every tone has its own unique beauty. In my modeling work, I strive to create a narrative that empowers women to love themselves just as they are. I want to encourage everyone to break free from societal expectations and embrace their individuality.

Collaborating with brands that prioritize inclusivity is something I’m passionate about because I want to amplify voices that have been historically overlooked. It’s all about promoting a broader understanding of beauty that includes everyone. I also believe in the importance of community among young black girls and women. Creating spaces where we can support one another, share our experiences, and uplift each other is essential. As a young woman in Zimbabwe, I believe we have incredible opportunities to use our talents and passions to make a positive impact in our communities and beyond. First and foremost, we can harness our creativity and innovation to address the challenges we face. Whether it’s through entrepreneurship, the arts, or technology, our skills can be a powerful force for change. For instance, many young women are starting their own businesses or engaging in social enterprises that not only provide income but also address pressing social issues, such as access to education or health care.

By following in the footsteps of inspiring figures like Melissa Mwale, who is paving the way for female entrepreneurship, we can create solutions that resonate with our communities.

Moreover, we have the power to amplify our voices and advocate for issues that matter to us. Engaging in discussions about gender equality, social justice, and community development is crucial. Can you share any exciting projects or collaborations you're working on?

I'm currently working on my modeling portfolio, which is an exciting project for me as I aim to put myself out there more in the industry. Alongside that, I’m actively involved as a full-time Rotaract member and the president of my local Rotaract club. We have an interesting year ahead with several impactful projects lined up.

One of our main initiatives is working with a children's home, where we aim to provide support and resources to the kids living there. Additionally, we’re organizing online leadership seminars to empower young people with the skills they need to succeed. We also have plans for Rotary Family Health Days, which will focus on promoting health and wellness within our community. Being involved in Rotaract not only allows me to contribute positively to society but also helps me develop my leadership skills and connect with like-minded individuals who are passionate about making a difference.

I’m excited about the potential impact we can create this year and how these experiences will complement my modeling journey. Balancing both my modeling aspirations and my commitment to community service is challenging but incredibly rewarding, and I can’t wait to see where these paths lead me

What advice would you give to young women who want to break into the modeling industry?

To young women aspiring to break into the modeling industry, my advice is simple but powerful: don't listen to the naysayers. There will always be people who doubt your dreams or question your abilities, but remember that you cannot control what others think or say. What you can control is how you react to those opinions. Go for it! Pursuing a career in modeling may not always be easy, especially if you don't have connections in the industry. However, it's important to remember that many successful models started from scratch, just like you. Believing in yourself is crucial, your self-confidence will shine through and attract opportunities. Also, keep in mind that God doesn't give us a vision or a dream without a purpose. There is a reason behind your aspirations, so lean into that purpose. Pray, stay focused, and trust the journey. Every step you take, no matter how small, brings you closer to your goals. Surround yourself with supportive people who uplift you and encourage your growth. Seek out opportunities, whether it's through networking, attending casting calls, or building your portfolio. Remember that persistence is key, and don't be discouraged by setbacks. Ultimately, stay true to yourself and your unique qualities.
